Digital Liability Waiver

A digital liability-waiver signing page, built for an Alaska guiding company after a conversation on their own trip about why they were still using paper. Participants sign electronically, and both they and the owner get an emailed PDF copy.

Problem

I was on a guided trip in Alaska with a genuinely great local outfitter when, one morning, they handed our group paper waivers to sign. I asked why paper instead of something electronic — it didn't seem like it would be hard to build — and was told they'd looked into it, but the vendors who offer that charge a sizable ongoing fee for what's really a fairly simple form.

Solution

I used their actual waiver as the source text and built a page that collects the same information electronically, captures a signature, and emails a generated PDF copy to both the signer and the owner. I set it up on a subdomain for them and made the project public — for them, and for anyone else who'd rather not pay a per-signature fee for this — as a small thank-you for a great trip.

Intended Users

Outfitters, guides, and small activity businesses that currently collect liability waivers on paper and want an electronic alternative without an ongoing per-signature fee.

Key Capabilities

  • Electronic signature capture, including a parent/guardian signature for minors
  • Automatic PDF generation of the signed waiver
  • Email delivery of the signed PDF to both the participant and the business owner
  • Company-agnostic by design — branding and waiver text are configuration, not code, so it can be repointed at a different business
